The SAT is a globally recognized college admission test that lets you show colleges what you know and how well you can apply that knowledge. It tests your knowledge of reading, writing and math — subjects that are taught every day in high school classrooms. Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year of high school, and almost all colleges and universities use the SAT to make admission decisions.
Taking the SAT is the first step in finding the right college for you — the place where you can further develop your skills and pursue your passions. But SAT scores are just one of many factors that colleges consider when making their admission decisions. High school grades are also very important. In fact, the combination of high school grades and SAT scores is the best predictor of your academic success in college.
Gain Access to More Scholarship Programs
When taking the PSAT/NMSQT, opt in to Student Search Service for access to nearly $180 million in combined awards.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is open to all students who meet entry requirements. Each year, some 1.5 million high school students enter the competition, 50,000 are recognized for their academic accomplishments and potential, and 8,600 win Merit Scholarship awards or Special Scholarships for college undergraduate study. Students who qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program are notified through their schools in September of their Senior year.

The SAT
This year the state of Illinois will again sponsor the SAT during the school day. All juniors will take the SAT during the school day in April 2024.
In addition, all sophomores at NBHS will take the PSAT 10 and all freshmen at NBHS will take the PSAT 9 in April 2024.
The SAT is used by colleges and universities for entrance requirements as well as scholarship selection. Using the SAT suite of assessments for freshmen and sophomores will give students feedback in areas where they need to improve for the SAT during their junior year. The College Board, which administers the SAT, partners with Khan Academy to provide instruction and practice for students preparing for the SAT.
